Artist Statement

Stevenson’s short films, sound pieces, digital art, and installations are introspective explorations of identity, nostalgia, self-image, and the transition from adolescence to adulthood. Her work is heavily research-based and takes influence from other fields of academia in order to tell a compelling narrative. Her thesis installation, Aunt Maude’s Economical Boiled Fruit Cake, creates a sensory experience with food-scented candles to trigger sensory encoded memories in order to temporarily relieve homesickness. This piece highlights the role of food studies in the fields of sociology, cultural anthropology, and history, as well as new research in regards to treating dementia.
